Why do otherwise respectable people think nothing of throwing trash out of their cars? And yes, your half-smoked, still lit ciggie counts as trash, with or without a filter. This pisses me off every time I see it. Today it was a chick in a very expensive looking BMW who smoked about 15% of her fashionable, long/slim cigarette and then casually flicked it out the window with her carefully manicured hands. Bee-yotch. I hope the universe decides some karmic balancing of the scales is in order, such as having a very large dog with diarrhea crap on her carefully manicured lawn.

If it makes you feel any better, people with BMWs pay too much to have their cars be serviced.
Used to? That's OK I think. Any dog crap karma should have already come to pass. I hope that isn't what happened to your mailbox. ;-)
Certain types of people with lots of money always expect other people to clean up after them. The world is theirs to do with as they please (according to them). I'm really not fond of those sorts of people. I'm not fond of the smoking habit either (to put it mildly).
By the way, would your husband enjoy this article? So how's the Mac? I am sincerely directing to him. I am not trying to pester you. ;-)
Smokers seem to universally toss their butts out of their cars, no matter how crappy or classy their ride. I just don't get how that isn't litter.
I passed along your article to PDM via email. He's already turned in for the night. I'm just staying up waiting to turn the hoses on (legally!) at midnight for the parched plants.
I used to smoke and drive meself once. Maybe there were times when i might have flicked the ash out of the window once or twice, but i would always stub out the butts in the little ashtray.
I niether smoke now, nor do i drive, and have been cycling my way back up the psycho-path to good health - mehopes?
Why is it legal after midnight? It seems to me that would be a good way to waste more water than ever. People turn their hoses on at 12:01 AM, fall asleep at 12:10 AM and then awaken anywhere from 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM. If those hoses were on the in the day, many people might still forget them, but many others wouldn't.
Of course, some could argue that most people are not willing to wait up until midnight just to turn hoses on, so that cuts down on a lot of waste. That makes sense, now that I think about it. However, in this ultra-shallow, image-driven town in which I live, practically everyone would stay up half the night to make sure their beautifully manicured lawns remained more beautifully manicured than their neighbors' beautifully manicured lawns. Sleep would come in a distant second on the value meter.
That's one of the things I miss about my old hometown: The soil was not at all conducive to beautifully manicured lawns. Most people just had to make do with what little nature gave them to work with. ;-)
I hate it when people throw out their trash. I followed someone once and returned their "lost" McDonald's bag. I've never seen her litter since!
madre farbot - way to go for not being a littlebug and quitting an unhealthy habit! I wish I was doing more things like bicycling.
MW - I assume the watering window has something to do with minimizing evaporation. It also makes it inconvenient to water unless you have a programmable irrigation system, which we don't. You're right about one consequence -- I turn the stuff on at midnight and leave it going until I get up at 6! But I am using low flow devices such as a soaker hose, so it probably isn't too much waste. I only water the new perennials I put in this spring and the herbs. Our lawn is dead, as in "extra crispy". It has a few green patches where the weeds are growing.
trinamick - great idea! I wish I could return a few of those lit cigarettes to some people...
Word Verification: "feawf" --- sounds like a noise my old dog might have made.
"Any dog crap karma should have already come to pass."
Dog crap tends to do that.
