I just saw the theme of last week's episode of "This American Life." Maybe you already know about it: The Cat Came Back; 8/18/2006; Episode 316. It tells some stories about cats (pets) who return home against all odds. Enjoy.

Regarding the novel "In the Garden of Iden" by the same author who wrote "Sky Coyote," Barnes & Noble says, "One of the most whimsical and lavish time-traveling frolics in recent memory."

For quite some time now, I've been wanting to recommend to you one of my favorite time-travel novels of all time, but kept putting it off (I seem to have trouble writing book reviews). It is Dancers at the End of Time. That is the compilation of a trilogy into one volume.

Be aware that it is not so easy to "get into" at first. When I read the first short volume back in the early 1980s, I struggled with it for a month, reading an average of one page a night, which was all I could tolerate. I refused to give up on it though because I had spent two years staring at it in a 2nd-hand store, building up my hopes, and I was determined to finish it. When I finally reached page 50 or 60, the real plot began, and I was hooked. I have never laughed so hard and so consistently in my life at a story (Twin's "Roughing It" is a distant second). The social commentary on our present era is extremely well done, too.

Thanks for the book recommendation. I'll look into it once I've finished reading my current glut of unread fiction.

If I had a dime for every time my cat shredded something he shouldn't...

I should have written above: "I refused to give up on it though because I had spent two years staring at it in a 2nd-hand store, building up my hopes, and [when I finally bought it] I was determined to finish it."

Also, I meant Twain's "Roughing It."

Finally, I hope against hope I didn't recommend this book to you before but completely forgot. That would be embarrassing. It almost rings a bell now that I think about it.

First off, congratulations on having such a clean toilet. As a germaphobe, I must commend you. Secondly, I hate a cat that used to do this. I hated it so I sympathize.
