Suburban Widowed Pot-Dealing Mom

Five simple words successfully used to pitch TV show Weeds to the execs at Showtime, according to an interview with the show's creator, Jenji Kohan.

It's back for a fourth season starting tonight. I'll be watching. The plot twists are wildly absurd and silly. While this show makes light of heavy topics, it does so without ever taking them lightly. If that makes any sense. And it probably doesn't, if you haven't seen it. Great cast, unpredictable show. Yeah, I will definitely be watching. Good TV is hard to find.

I never even had heard of this program but now, I see from reading the back history that it runs on Showtime -which isn't available via our cable service. And even if it were, I won't sign up for any of the single channel things (HBO or TMC, etc.) and pay extra on top of their already exorbitant fees. Getting the high speed connection through them is the only extra bucks I'll shell out there.

Yes, it is on Showtime. I can't see this one ever breaking through to a mainstream channel, unlike The Sopranos or Sex and the City or Dexter.

You could see Dexter breaking through to mainstream tv?

I watched some of the first seasons' episodes. If USA Today's preview of the new season is any guide, this year the show crosses the line fromn the believable to the absurd, and that's usually when I stop watching.

ll - They were airing Dexter on CBS during the writer's strike.

dr s - I thought they crossed that line long ago, but still make the show work.

To bad I don't have showtime. I have to agree with Jeni> I won't pay for another premium channel

I don't get Showtime but I've watched some eps on DVD (gotta love Netflix). I love Mary Louise Parker and I think the show is really clever. It hasn't totally hooked me but I do like it. A couple of my friends are seriously into it.

Ya know, the only program I actually watch at will is "Eureka" from the Sci-Fi station. I am intrested in Weeds, but not enough to pay for showtime! Keep us up with the 20 on the show!

I know that fermi... but I still couldn't SEE it breaking through, which is why it was such a surprise...

minnesota - I hear ya. And there is always the option of watching a show on DVD.

twg - Mary Louise Parker is a big reason why this show is appealing.

jenny - you've got good taste. We enjoy Eureka and look forward to its return.

ll - I have no idea if it was a hit or not. I just know I saw Dexter advertised on CBS. I had already seen the the full, uncut SHO version so I did not watch it on network.

I LOVE Weeds, I've been watching it from the beginning.

You described it perfectly. Unlike some satirical show that mock and treat hard subjects very lightly Weeds feels more like a hilarious spotlight - they shine it on things and then say - see how absurd this world is!!

I haven't seen Monday's epi yet, it's on my DVR. It's a treat for the weekend.

dianne - I wasn't all that impressed with Monday's show, but maybe they are setting up the rest of the season with all the changes (location being the most obvious).

Fermi! You aren't living vicariously through that "horribly evil," suburban, widowed, pot-dealing mom, are you? The sainted, all knowing government has taught us that they know what is best for us as far as pot goes. Right? ;-)

Shows like "Weeds" and "That 70s Show" (I love the latter) have put the lie to their pathetic demonization efforts, haven't they?
