Porch Sittin'

glider

The glider is back from the powder coater and looking better than it has in decades. The finish is sleek and glossy and the rust is gone, sand blasted to oblivion. Makes a very nice sittin' spot on the new porch. My mom fondly remembers sitting with her high school dates on this glider on her front porch, circa 1950s. I remember it from Big Daddy and Grandmother's back porch in Stone Mountain, and later in McDonough. Nearly every family gathering ended up on their porch at some point, with the glider in motion and fully occupied.

This photo is desaturated and sepia-toned. I wanted it to look vintage, like the glider. (A more abstract/artistic view can be seen here.) The glider's true new color is a dark blueish green. The original color was seafoam green with white squares on the seats and seatbacks, but the only color I ever remember it was hand-painted white with generous amounts of rust showing through the brush marks, and a black base. We won't see any rust for a very long time now...

Woo Hoo! That glider really looks spiffy -and very, very inviting too!

I just acquired -about two months ago -the old glider my aunt had out on her carport. It's a pretty yucky version of a beat-up lime green, hss two seat cushions and two back cushions in a lime green and stripes type design. Needs redone, spruced up, big time but not gonna happen this year. For now, once we get the screened canopy thing up, it will go in that area and work fine as is till we have time/funds, etc to do a nice redo on it in the future.
I love to sit on a glider though -so relaxing, isn't it?

Very nice...

I didn't expect it to be all steel, and it looks like a good quality item.

Did they resize the bearings like was suggested?

jeni - you could always recover the cushions for a quick and cheap fix right away, then get the metal parts taken care of later. I'd look for fabric on sale and see what you can come up with. Cushion covers are easy to sew.

ll - it is a nice piece, and the coating shop did a good job with it. The hardware is new where it was taken apart and reassembled, but there wasn't really enough meat to drill out the holes any larger. The gliding action is smooth and noiseless, so all is well.

I'm sitting on it now, with the Sunday paper, my computer, and a cup of tea. We've got vintage jazz playing softly in the background. Silvio is batting around "Mr. Sproing" (his favorite cat toy) and Moxy is on the rail scanning the yard for critters. The sun is filtering in through the trees to my left and the whole yard is alive with cricket chirping and birdsong. A nice start to a lazy Sunday.
