Hair today...

...donation tomorrow!

before after

I am donating my 11" ponytail to Locks of Love. Now if I could just figure out how to make what's left not look so choppy and weird... I'm hoping it is just hair shock and will settle down in a few days. It feels strange and will take some getting used to.

I've thought of doing a Locks of Love donation, alongside my long-haired girls. Hair grows back fast, it's a great donation! Way to go!

Their website says that 80% of the hair donations are made by children. Sounds like an excellent idea.

There was an article (in the local paper, I think) recently about a little boy who grew his hair out long just so he could donate some hair the "didn't have cooties". He knew that most of the donors are girls, but some of the kids who receive wigs are boys and so he was trying to help them get some boy-hair into their wigs!

Impressive. You're supporting a good cause.

Congratulations on your donation! It's a great cause. Love the story about the cootie wigs. I wish you'd show us a picture of the new do, I'm sure you're still just getting used to it.

dr s - I was inspired by several of my friends and colleagues who have donated their hair over the years. Here is a shout out to Elaine, Tina, Liza, and Steph. Not only did they do it before I did, they also donated much longer lengths!

magnetbabe - I'll need some time to adjust. I like the way it looks from the front, but not that crazy about the back just yet.

Since I already commented on your Flickr account regarding your very generous donation, I'll just say that the same holds true here too.

Wow! I can imagine that it feels really strange. How short is it now?

By the way, it is my opinion that your readers really should consider registering for free at Flickr so they can comment on your photos there, even if they don't post any of their own photos. They really are missing out on a lot of excellent images that you don't post here.

mw - thanks.

writegirl - it feels much lighter and is bouncier, just brushing the top of my shoulders.

You hould have shown us a picture from the front. That way we could see how fine you are...

Your donation sounds like one to an excellent cause to me. A very good friend of mine had cancer about four years ago and the chemo caused her hair to fall out (The chemo I had didn't have that effect) and she had to get wigs. Knowing what she went through, it makes me really glad to see people making donations of this type more and more frequently now.

Way to go Lady!

I'm sure you'll get used to it in no time and I bet you look great.

Think of how much easier the morning is without all that hair to dry.

Oops! People really should check out Kathleen's Flickr account too. I tend to forget about it because she seldom visits it (or comments on other people's pics) and only updates once or twice a year with about 500 photos at a time. ;-)

I know Fermicat has a Flickr link on her Blogger home page, but, to be fair, here it is again.

Very nice, Fermi! My sister has done that. I wish they were around when I cut my hair back in 1980 (the last time it was actually long).

Feels weird? Tell me about it... why when I just cut my beard last week...

Wha? You honestly can't think it's not the same thing? Can you?

Although it is a helluva shame to see such lovely locks cut short...

wa11z - you are too charming!

jeni - definitely a good cause. I would have been so upset to lose my hair as a child or teenager. I am happy now to be able to give something back. I see so many bald patients at work - and I know they do not all want to be that way.

dianne - it takes far less time to dry, for sure. Feels really weird in the shower!

kat - I haven't cut that much at one time before, but maybe if this charity had existed much earlier we would have timed major changes accordingly.

mw - I will vouch for kat's flickr photos here - y'all should check them out!

ll - hair is hair. Cutting a long beard is exactly the same as cutting long hair in my book. The change is startling. My locks fell for a good cause -- and I probably would never have grown them so long if I had not been doing it for Lock of Love.

When my daughter and grandaughter donated their hair, they said it was a great feeling knowing they had contributed to a good cause instead of having their swept up and thrown away. Good for you fermicat.

minnesotablue - I would never have cut off 11" at one time just to drop to the floor and be swept up! This was by far the most drastic haircut I have ever had. But I get your point. For me, it was nearly two years of NOT getting my hair cut and swept up a fraction of an inch at a time that allowed me to cut that ponytail and donate. I hope a new wig with a bit of me in it makes some little girl's day!
