Word of the year?

w00t!

Yes, the computer geek's expression of joy, spelled with two zeros. It's cute, but it isn't a word. "Facebook" took second place - as a verb, not a noun. Merriam-Webster is really slipping.

That defies grammar rules there doesn't it? A noun is supposed to be the name of a person, place or thing and isn't "Facebook" then the name of a thing? Or maybe even a "place" when you think of it in respect to looking for it on the internet, on the computer, etc., since it takes a URL to find it. Or is that too much of a stretch there?

I understand the verbification of Google; but, use Facebook as a verb in a sentence. "I facebooked him." What did I just do? Is it a felony or a misdemeanor?

So if you use w00t at the beginning of a sentence do you capitalize the "w"?

I'm just thankful that I found an explanation of this "word" as I've seen it around and had NO CLUE what it meant.

In case anyone is curious, here are the other nine of the top ten:

2. facebook
3. conundrum
4. quixotic
5. blamestorm
6. sardoodledom
7. apathetic
8. Pecksniffian
9. hypocrite
10. charlatan

"Sardoodledom"?!? Never heard of it. Blamestorm is a good one, though. Heh.

Fermi, you should have challenged everyone to use each word in a sentence:-)

I'm surprised no add'l Rap phrases made the list this year.

Now that Merriam Webster has used w00t, all the computer geeks must abandon it immediately.
