Silvio, again.

He's back at the emergency vet with another urinary blockage. The kid has a knack for dramatic timing. Once again, this happened when we were scheduled to travel. Fortunately, it was only an overnight trip, and Mom was here to take care of him. Silvio was showing a few symptoms yesterday morning. We took him to our vet for a quick look-see. His bladder was empty. So Mom came over, and we left for Montgomery. His distress just got worse. He didn't pee all day, in spite of constantly trying to. Then he started puking. Off to the vet! (Thanks, Mom.)

He is catheterized and is doing well. We'll take him to his regular vet Monday morning and figure out a plan for his treatment. That "turn him into a girl cat" operation is looking very likely. We don't want him to keep going through this.

Aw, that poor cat! Guess, if they think the sex change surgery will help him, then that's the best road to take. You're so right about not putting him through any more than is absolutely necessary.

And, as to the other post, and stove cleaning, isn't it amazing though just how much DOES go down along the side of the stove, even when you think you've always cleaned up after your messes? Always it quite remarkable here when we have to pull the stove out what shows up along the side as well as under the contraption too -usually pens, pencils, little balls sent there by errant cats and kids, etc!

Sex change? Yipe!!

jeni - we'll go with vet recommendations, but the surgery seems likely at this point. Will know more tomorrow.

ll - it's harsh, but these blockages are life-threatening. We won't tell him he's not a dude afterward. He'll still have his Y-chromosome. Just not all of his equipment.

Oh, poor kitty! Yeah, he's blocking up really quick. My vet is suggesting the same surgery for my cat and he only blocks up once a year. (He's on new food now... so fingers crossed.)
Hope he's ok. :(

nypinta - they said it was difficult getting the catheter placed and suspect that his urethra is too narrow. Poor little guy.

poor poor kitty. I hope that operation works out for him. Years ago when Emerson had this problem, they neutered him and that cut it down to maybe two or three times a year. Cantalope (discovered close to when he died) and a science diet cat food. Now they got meds you can give them and they put a tube thing in there (is that the cathider thing?) Anyway, good luck with him

I know plenty of dudes WITH their equipment who aren't all that useful. or manly.

If it is what the vet thinks will make him better then it's all good.

Sorry about all the stress, I know how frustrating it is when they're sick since they can't talk - damn it!!

I wish cats could talk more and people less.

Hugs to Silvio and to you.

I read your sugar mishap below (blargh) and now this one. That's just so wow to go through. Could the cat take cranberry juice? Isn't there anything natural he could drink or eat to cure the blockages? Damn, sex change sounds so drastic, not to mention expensive as hell. I still think you and your man are saints!

jennylu - he's had the special cat food and the catheter treatment and it isn't enough for him. The vet is fairly confident that this will fix the problem.

dianne - ha ha! Cats are good at hiding symptoms. We wish Silvio would talk less at 5am!

beth - we've already tried the special diet, but it appears that his problem is anatomical. His urethra is too narrow.

Poor baby. I wish there was something more they can do for him.

I'm sorry I've been so absent and missed all the updates on Silvio. Poor little sweetheart.

I'm just happy to know that I'm not the only one who has spent a whole lot of money on cats. Tikal was definitely the $1000+ cat, the little darling. And completely worth every single solitary penny.

kat - Silvio decided to have his problems in the most expensive way possible. Nights and weekends. *sigh* I'm looking forward to him getting back to normal and being able to be himself again.
