Bat Country

...now includes my attic. While I appreciate the fact that the bats spend their time eating mosquitos, I'm not exactly thrilled at the prospect of my attic filling up with bat guano. And I am wondering if they are the reason the attic fan isn't working very well.

Any ideas how to encourage them to find another place to roost? Should I get a bat house?

Try to find out where they are coming into the attic. The SIL here says they can slip through the tiniest of openings -as evidenced a few weeks back when one came down into Maya's bedroom and woke her up. Her screams, in turn, woke her Dad up too -an incredible feat since he could probably sleep through an 8.0 on the Richter Scale for sure! All he heard he said was her crying "Don't let the black bird eat my feet!" And, then she covered her head. Go figure, huh?

Time to call...Batman.

I can't imagine a bat house wouldn't be a good idea, especially once you get them out of the house.

My SIL would be in seventh heaven, she loves bats. And vultures and spiders. Yeah, she's a little weird.

Shotgun?

Yup... you might have to build a bathouse. No... not a cathouse... a bathouse.

I think I would just spend the money and have a professional do it. If you just have one bat that hasn't been there long, no biggie, but you may have a bigger problem than you think! I lurk on your blog a lot but had to put in my 2 cents on this one. http://www.batcontrolpros.com is the first site I looked at and they say that insurance may cover the service...

jeni - they get in through the vents. I've seen 'em go in and out.

wa11z - do you have his number?

kat - I've been meaning to get a bathouse for a while now. Gotta install them pretty high up though.

ll - I'm sure my old neighbor from MA would be happy to send one that he has made.

shelli - I sure as hell don't want to be the one going up there and rounding them up. But I don't want them exterminated. Just relocated. They can still munch on mosquitoes any time they want.

Most specialists don't exterminate, just relocate. I still have not put up my bat house if you want it next time I come down. I will probably never get around to putting it up.

I grew up with bats always getting in our home and it's true, they can get in through the smallest opening, but once they start, it's hard to get them to stop. I do think a bat house would be a great alternative. That's what Martha Stewart does and yeah, she's a bitch, but she's a smart bitch.

I always think some things call for a pro - and bat relocation sounds like one of those things

Send 'em over to Turner Field - the Braves could use some bats...

shelli - sure, if you aren't going to use it, I would be happy to!

beth - been meaning to get a bat house.

dianne - there is NO WAY that I am going in the attic to do it.

dr s - the Braves could use some players who are younger than me. I love those guys, but damn, they've got problems and can't seem to stay off the DL.

We had bats in our attic and it was a pain to get rid of them. Even having the pros come over didnt work for the following season. So my father installed a window up there. They didnt like the sunlight all day so that eliminated them.

But they were getting in the house all the time. It drove us...batty...

I was also told that there is something that you can use that makes a high pitched sound that humans cant hear but they can. It will drive them away. But I would worry about using that with the cats.

Call in a pro and see what your options are.
