Microsoft Word SUCKS!!!!!

It has ruined my entire day, and is making me want to slam my head repeatedly into a wall out of frustration. Why, oh WHY will it NOT DO what I want it to do?!? It is a simple thing, and it JUST. WON'T. WORK. I hate that I have spent my ENTIRE DAY wrangling with these piddly-assed format problems that have nothing to do with physics!!!!

You'll have to change the subject if you want an argument outta me...

Probably very few of us who haven't had similar issues with either Word or some other equally obnoxious when it wants to be software. Empathy abounds.

I'll restrain myself for once and just say, "Oh, so true!"

Well, Okaaaayyyy.... I guess will un-restrain myself just a teeny little bit and hesitantly ;-) add that I, personally, would leave the word "Word" out of that title. It covers a lot more ground that way and is even more, "Oh, so true!!!"

I sincerely wish I knew of a freeware word processor for that awful operating system that I could recommend to you, but I don't. I was about ready to suggest writing your document in an online writing environment, like Gmail, formatting it there and then pasting it into Word, but your document is probably too private to trust to the internet. Right?

ll - I didn't think I'd find anyone defending MS here.

jeni - thanks. I needed to vent, definitely.

mw - this is a work thing, so I am locked into using MS Word 2003 because it is the only thing that is tied into our other software applications. I found a workaround after struggling for 6 hours. Not what I wanted to do, but good enough to let me go home without feeling like a failure for today. And on that note - I've gotta head home before traffic gets bad!

I've thought for years just how truly amazing it is that the vast majority of supposedly highly intelligent executives and decision makers in giant firms and major corporations really are clueless when it comes to choosing computer technology. They invariably choose the technology that costs them four times more in operating/maintenance costs and lost productivity than the alternative would cost simply because they don't know any better (due to ignorance or misplaced bias) or because everyone else is doing it. The majority of the few who do know better are too scared to rock the boat, even though doing so would save their corporations a fortune in money, and productivity would greatly increase due to far fewer technical problems (such as you experienced) and downtime.

MW, try Open Office, it pretty much does what MS Office does.

That said, I still use MS and it bugs me most days. 2007 is the worst. It moved things around for no good reason and adds steps for no reason.

Fermi, you can turn off most of the "formatting" stupidity if you explore the inner workings of the program.

Part of the problem was that I was working with templates, rather than documents, which I am more familiar with. There is probably an easy fix, but damned if I could find it. The person who has worked with this combination of applications (MS Word and the vendor software that uses the tie-in) was not available on Friday. I am hoping that she can help me figure it out on Monday.

I learned LaTeX and wrote my whole dissertation with it. I will never use Word again.

Um...I'm something of a Word expert.

e-me if you're still having problems. It's what I do for a living, not something to which I ever actually aspired.

Fermi, I declared years ago that Bill Gates was going to hell because God was pissed off, too, at all the glitches/idiosyncrasies inherent in Microsoft software.

My Mom yelled at me and I pointed out that I didn't say, "Go to hell, Bill Gates." just that God was frustrated as heck, too, only he could do something about it. ;-)
