Sad news...

The rescued cat had a lot of stuff wrong with her, including feline leukemia, so we decided it was best to have her put to sleep. She was in pretty bad shape due to her lack of care. We were calling her "Squeaky" because of her squeaky little meow. I feel horrible about it, but at least she had one weekend of being warm and fed and cared for and loved.

Update: The person who rescued her just called - she found out this cat was 2 years old. She was so tiny, I thought she was just a kitten. So did the vet. They probably never got her any vaccines for anything, dammit. You shouldn't get a pet if you can't take care of it properly. There was no need for this sweet little cat to have contracted FELV. Such a waste. It makes me mad just thinking about it.

It's so sickening that people don't take care of their animals. Unfortunately, those are usually the ones that have kids too. Glad your kitty got to have a little bit of love before the end.

Squeaky, we hardly knew ye. But we all know a good, good lovin' kitty when we see one and you were definitely that. Squeaky will suffer no more and she went out on a high note. We won't forget Squeaky Kitty. She's on a warm bed now in Kitty Heaven.

I still feel really bummed out and sad about the kitty, even though I only had her for a couple of days. She was such a sweet cat in spite of her condition and didn't deserve to be mistreated and neglected. All she wanted was to be held and petted.

Thanks for the kind words.

Poor Squeaky. At least she had it good for awhile.

My sister and I rescued a cat in the middle of winter a few years back. We even named it on the way to the vet - Riley - to make sure he wasn't sick and didn't feline leukemia to get my cats sick. Turns out he did, so we had them put him to sleep. And insisted on staying. We're sure the vets thought we were insane crying like that over a stray cat we knew less than 2 hours.

It is so sad when you rescue an animal and it has a glimmer of hope for a normal life, then you find out that it is sick and can't be helped. It just isn't fair for the little guys.

Poor little Squeaky. Even though you know you're doing the right thing, it's heartbreaking. And when you think of all the poor kitties out there who don't get rescued, it's tragic.

We also had to put an adopted cat to sleep who had feline leukemia. He had been well cared for before but he was an outdoor cat and he just picked it up somewhere. He stayed healthy for a few months after we found out, but after his third infection, we decided to do the deed before he got really sick.
