Merlin the Mighty

Cats are well known for leaving "gifts" of prey at their owners' doorstep. My cats are no exception, which is why it is wise to look down before leaving the house barefoot unless you really enjoy having chipmunk intestine between your toes. Count me out.

Today, Merlin brought us a gift of his own, but I'm not sure he really gets the concept. He was quite proud of his catch. And as usual in our cat household, the prey he was in the process of eating wasn't quite dead yet. Merlin ate the wings first. A bird, you ask? Sadly, no. The noble creature that Merlin bagged was... a butterfly. Which he carried to our doorstep, meowed until we opened the door, and then ate in front of us. He probably didn't understand why we were laughing at him.

So true about looking down to see what might possibly be there in front of you before stepping out -barefoot or not! So far, I've not seen our current feline creature -or any we had before him -bring home butterflies. However, I think it was the mother of this cat who actually toted a not-so-lovely rat she had caught into the house one day and about scared the living daylights out of my daughter, Mandy, along with Maya's TSS, Amanda! Both of them were screaming like a couple of banshees and luckily, my son happened to be here at the time so he very kindly disposed of the dead rat. (And, I think he loved every minute of watching his sister and the TSS scream and squirm too!)

A rat? Very ambitious! Mine go for smaller rodents mostly (and I have never seen a rat around here).

It isn't unusual for cats to chase butterflies, but I've never received one as a gift at the door before.

I guess he thought that it was one odd looking bird :)

Our fuzz-heads are champion Moth and bug catchers. They'd faint if they ever saw a mouse other than the little rabbit fur things you get at pet store (toys look like mice about an inch long)
