We are having some more trouble with Silvio. Saturday before last, he peed on the bed while we were in it. That little stunt earned him a visit to the vet last Monday. There was some blood in his urine, but no pus or crystals and he didn't have a fever. They put him on antibiotics. He's been on them for a week. This morning, he was downstairs meowling in protest of the empty food dish. When I didn't jump right up and fill it, he came upstairs and peed right next to my night stand. Needless to say, this is not how I want to start my day, and I am not sure I will be able to get the smell out of the leg of the nightstand, which is an antique with sentimental value to me. The wood is dry and it sucked that urine right up into the fibers. I applied an enzyme formula cleaner to it about half a dozen times and I can still smell the unmistakable odor of cat pee. I don't know what else to do to fix it. NOT HAPPY!
The problem with this type of behavior is that in light of his background of having major urinary issues, I am never certain of the cause when he does some extra-curricular peeing. Today's case was pretty clear - he was sending a message - but what happened last weekend when he peed in the bed? Was he upset about something, or does it hurt when he pees and now he associates the litter box with painful urination? I've noticed that he almost always has a quick licking session after he goes to the box. I think that there might be some irritation. I really hope that we are not heading down the road of having constant inappropriate peeing in the house. We would be forced to turn him into an outside cat, and I don't want to do that.
Any of you cat people care to chime in? Any thoughts?

A Rude Awakening
I was startled awake at 4:20 this morning when my 13-year old cat, Zima, decided to empty her bladder on my pillow right next to my head. If she was trying to get my attention, she definitely succeeded. Her efforts are being rewarded with a trip to the vet this afternoon. I figure this is a result of three possible things: (a) she has a UTI, (b) she is unhappy about being picked on constantly by the other two cats, or (c) she is mad that I moved the litterbox downstairs and/or that I would not get up in the middle of the night and let her outside to pee.
Let me just say that I am not amused. Had to throw away my favorite feather pillow, start a load of laundry and take a shower in the wee hours of the morning, change the sheets, then go back to bed with sopping wet hair and try to get enough sleep to make it through another work day. Grumble, grumble, grumble…
Update 12/30/07 - She did have a urinary tract infection. After a few days on antibiotics, she seems to be feeling much better. And I haven't been peed on, which is always a plus.

Hard Times in the Cat House
All is not well in the house of three cats.

Silvio is a cute little guy, but it was not very cute when he peed on the bed this morning. On the quilt that I made for PDM by hand. That is not all that washable. *sigh*

Zima has lost her voice. Friday she could say "Meow." By Sunday all she could do was croak a staccato "Maa." I took her to the vet today. There was no obvious cause, so we have to watch her over the next few days.

Moxy is very unsettled. She "plays with" Silvio, sort of. But mostly she watches his every move like a hawk. I don't think she cares much for being a "middle child". She is curious and interested in Silvio, but jealous at the same time.
