Lame Excuses For Not Posting
I took the weekend off, and I'm having to work overtime this week to get some machine stuff done after hours. Regular posting to resume soon, I hope. I have some post topics in mind, but the thoughts need to roll around my brain some more before they are ready to share. Plus, so many cat photos... so few Fridays.

Death and Taxes
Death and taxes consumed most of my Saturday. It was a rainy day - steady rain for a change - and perfect for the jobs at hand. It wasn't as bad as the post title cliche makes it seem. I spent the day scanning old photos and locating some digital shots for Big Daddy's funeral reception. I also did our taxes (finally!).
Going through the photos was fun. I did find some good Big Daddy photos, but also enjoyed seeing old friends, family, pets, and places I used to live or visit. There were a few issues getting my scanner to work on PDM's computer. The software didn't work with Leopard (his new operating system), but the problem was easily solved by booting up with the older operating system. I've still got to scan photos from some other family members and expect to get some digital photos from them as well. The obituary was published in today's paper, and his service is next Saturday. So the photo collecting is a bit "last minute" but I think it will all work out in the end.
The tax stuff went smoothly (other than the usual shock at seeing the total amount we have paid in over the year). We don't have anything super complicated going on with our income and/or deductions, so the returns look pretty much the same every year. I originally just bought a software package to do federal, but I caved and downloaded the state version because I just didn't feel like dealing with it and I knew it would take far less effort that way. The state program found something I didn't know about and more than paid for itself with that bit of info, so it worked out for the best. This kind of stuff is NOT how I like to spend my Saturdays, even rainy ones. I'm glad it's over for another year.
I haven't done anything worthwhile today. And isn't that the best way to spend a lazy Sunday? PDM has spent hours making more tessellated tile patterns for the new porch floor. Me, I've been damn near useless today. Reading, surfing, eating, and napping, with about 20 minutes of random house and yard work thrown in to make me feel less guilty about the rest of the day.

Why I Hate Winter
So, we're in the dead of winter and I'm feeling the blahs an awful lot of the time. Not much to watch on TV due to the writers' strike. Not enough daylight at the end of the day to do anything outside. The bathroom project has been slowed to a crawl due to the cold weather. There is always reading, but that makes me sleepy and leads to napping. It has been slow at work, although that might change due to an assignment I was just given.
Bored at work, bored at home. I can't seem to motivate myself to do much of anything. This is why winter will always be my least favorite season. (At least I moved back to Atlanta, where winters are short and mild. All this was definitely worse when I lived in New England.) I feel sluggish, lazy, and uninspired.
What do YOU do to fight the winter blahs?

Yes, you.
You know who you are.
I've seen dozens of you around my neighborhood. You're one of those people who haven't removed a single item of your garish outdoor Christmas display, in spite of the fact that it is now six days into January and Christmas is oh-so-very-over. And not only that, you are still plugging it all in every night, and every morning your inflatable plastic Santa, snowglobe, nativity scene and whatnot is all crumpled down like some horrific massacre has occurred during the night.
Guess what? Christmas is over, and won't come around again for another 353 days. As proud as you are of your excessive display of holiday spirit, 'tis not the season any more. Do your neighbors a favor and take all that stuff back to your attic. Bonus points for class if you don't leave that last string of lights up on the eaves all year. The temperature is back up in the 60s today, so there is really no excuse. Get crackin'!
